Remote SEO Jobs: Roles, Skills and Where to Find Them
SEO has always suited remote work. The work happens in browsers, crawlers and documents, and results show up in dashboards everyone can see. In 2026 the job is also changing: more ads now ask for skills in AI search, often called AEO (answer engine optimisation) or GEO (generative engine optimisation).
This guide covers the main types of remote SEO jobs, what employers ask for, what the roles pay, and where to find them. It's based on 18 remote SEO and search jobs listed on GetRemoteMarketingJobs in October–November 2026, plus what we've seen across the wider market.
What remote SEO jobs look like right now
Here are the 18 SEO/search listings in our sample:
- Employers: product companies (e.g. BetterHelp, Life360, Stripe, Paddle, YipitData, Docplanner) and agencies (e.g. Wpromote, Brafton, DEPT, SOCi).
- Contract type: 15 full-time; 3 freelance contracts (multilingual SEO content writing).
- Location: most were tied to a country or region: USA, Canada, the UK/Ireland/Portugal, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands. Only a couple had no location restriction.
- AI search: 5 of the 18 titles mention AI search, AEO or GEO. Examples: International SEO/AEO Manager, Organic Growth Manager, SEO & AEO, Organic & AI Search Manager, AEO and GEO Marketing Manager.
That last point matters most for your career. Companies now want to show up both in Google's results and in AI-generated answers, and they're writing that into SEO job titles.
The main types of remote SEO job
1. SEO specialist / SEO manager (generalist)
You own organic performance for a site or a group of clients: keyword research, on-page optimisation, content briefs, reporting and working with developers. This is the most common title family and a good place to start.
2. Technical SEO
You handle crawling, indexing, site architecture, Core Web Vitals, structured data, internationalisation (hreflang) and migrations. These roles are in demand at large sites and marketplaces. One listing in our sample was a Senior Technical & Data SEO Specialist role in Spain.
3. Content SEO / SEO writer
You research, write and refresh content that ranks. Many of these are freelance, often in a particular language. Our sample included freelance SEO writer roles for Italian, Dutch and Spanish.
4. Local SEO / visibility
You manage Google Business Profiles, listings and reviews for businesses with many locations. Our sample had two "Local Visibility Optimization" roles at an agency in Canada.
5. AI search / AEO / GEO
You make sure a brand is cited in AI answers and AI overviews. The work includes building the brand's presence as an entity, structured content, digital PR and measuring brand mentions in AI tools. These roles usually pay at manager level and above.
6. Paid search (often grouped with SEO)
PPC and paid search roles often appear next to SEO roles on job boards. In our sample, Paid Search Manager roles at an agency listed $74,000–$90,000 and an Associate Director, Paid Search listed $100,000–$115,000.
Skills employers ask for
Across the listings, the same skills kept coming up:

- Technical audits (crawling, indexing, site speed, schema)
- Link earning and digital PR
Tools
- Google Search Console and GA4

- Ahrefs or Semrush
- Looker Studio or spreadsheets for reporting
2026 additions
- Optimising for AI search and AI overviews (AEO/GEO)
- Structured data and entity optimisation
- International SEO (hreflang, localisation)
- Working with product and engineering teams; writing tickets developers can act on
Remote skills
- Clear written recommendations that lead with business impact
- Prioritising on your own (impact vs. effort)
- Reporting that people outside SEO can understand
What remote SEO jobs pay
Of the 18 SEO/search listings, 4 in-house or agency organic SEO roles listed a yearly USD salary:
| Role | Company | Advertised range |
|---|---|---|
| Manager, SEO | Wpromote (agency) | $69,000 – $80,000 |
| Organic Growth Manager, SEO & AEO | YipitData | $108,000 – $123,000 |
| International SEO/AEO Manager | BetterHelp | $110,000 – $130,000 |
| SEO/ASO Manager | Life360 | $121,500 – $178,500 |
The median midpoint of those four is about $117,750. With only four data points, treat that as a rough guide, not a benchmark. Some patterns stand out anyway:
- In-house roles paid more than agency roles at the same "Manager" title.
- AEO/AI search in the title came with ranges of $108k and up.
- Outside the US, pay was lower. A senior technical SEO role in Spain listed €45,000–€56,000, and a Canadian local visibility role listed CAD 49,500–54,000.

How to get hired for a remote SEO job
- Have a site you can show. A personal or side project site with Search Console screenshots shows real experience. Even a small site with 200 clicks a month counts.
- Write one public audit. Pick a real company, audit five issues, estimate the impact and suggest fixes. Hiring managers remember this.
- Show results, not tasks. Write "Increased non-brand clicks 40% in 6 months by consolidating 120 thin pages", not "did keyword research."
- Add AI search to your skills. Run a simple test: track whether a brand gets cited for 20 prompts in AI assistants, then improve it. Writing it up puts you ahead of most candidates.
- Apply where location fits. Most SEO listings in our sample had a country restriction. Filter by where you can legally work before you spend time on an application.
